He was responding to a question posed by government MP A.H.M Azwer who had asked if it was true that cigarettes were being sold to youth under 18 years of age in Mannar although there is a law that cigarettes can be sold only to those over the age of 21. Dissanayake said that he was aware that are being sold to teenagers in Mannar. He said that the Health Ministry has received complaints regarding this. Cigarettes are being sold to teenagers in Mannar, parliament was informed today.Deputy Health Minister Lalith Dissanayake said that the relevant officials have been alerted over this. The Deputy Minister said that the police and Public Health Inspectors will be briefed on this and adviced on the action that needs to be taken.He also said that shop owners both in Mannar and even in Colombo will be advised against selling cigarettes to anyone below the age of 21.
