The Gold Coast’s Michael and Carlene Duffy share their tops tips to improve your home’s environment

first_imgAdd more house plants to your home to help filter airborne pollutants. Some plants are better than others at this, for example bamboo palm, snake plant and peace lily are all great at absorbing carbon dioxide and pollutants from the air and releasing oxygen. 5) Trickle vents Philips Air Purifiers give real time air quality feedback through a numerical allergen index and most models have the Philips Aerasense Technology, which has a colour ring that lights up in real time reflecting any change in air quality. It removes 99.97 per cent of airborne allergens such as pollen, pet dander and dust mites. 4) Kitchen fans  2) Keep it natural  Gas stoves can affect indoor air quality so installing a strong and powerful extractor fan above the stove is essential in helping combat that. With a lot of our projects we use retractable fans to keep the aesthetics clean and minimal in the kitchen. 1) Air Purifiers  6) Fresh furniturecenter_img Be aware that a lot of furniture is made with solvents that continue to release toxins into the air when delivered into homes. Michael and Carlene Duffy. (AAP/Image Sarah Marshall“When starting any home improvement project, air quality should be top-of-mind,” Michael said“It’s an essential part of our plans, from installing correct ventilation to buying paint that gives off less harmful gases.”These are the Gold Coast couple’s top tips and tricks for improving air quality in the home, particularly when renovating. The couple suggest investing in house plants to help filter airborne pollutants. Trickle ventilators are the best option for getting outside air into your home through a filter, which will increase the airflow and help remove stagnant air. High risk areas such as the kitchen are good places to house these. Some paints and flooring contain gases that continue to emit after installation, which can irritate allergies and create lower air quality. When buying carpet, flooring and paint, be sure to choose low or no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC).More from news02:37International architect Desmond Brooks selling luxury beach villa14 hours ago02:37Gold Coast property: Sovereign Islands mega mansion hits market with $16m price tag2 days ago  3) House plants last_img read more

Uganda Cup: KCCA hit Amuka for eight

first_imgMutyaba (left) and Okello (right) celebrate one of the goals against Amuka Bright Stars (Photos by KCCA Media)FUFA Uganda Cup 2018/19KCCA FC 8-2 Amuka Bright StarsStarTimes Stadium, Lugogo Wednesday, 26-12-2018LUGOGO – KCCA FC started their bid to retain the Uganda Cup with an emphatic 8-2 victory at home to Big League side Amuka Bright Stars. In the game played at Lugogo, Mike Mutyaba helped himself to a hat trick while Allan Okello and Steven Sserwadda scored a brace each. Substitute Julius Poloto grabbed the 8th with less than 10 minutes to play.A goal in each half from Christopher Kirya and Bronson Nsubuga acted as consolation for the visitors. After a dominant start by KCCA, Sserwadda put the hosts ahead inside 12 minutes with a header off Herbert Achai’s cross. On 20 minutes, Mutyaba scored the first of his three on the day, side footing from close range past Amuka goalkeeper, Shadrack Ssebulime. Two minutes past the half hour mark, Mutyaba made it 3-0 to the hosts with another close range strike with Okello grabbing the assist.Amuka Bright Stars pulled a goal back in the 41st minute through Christopher Kirya, against the run of play.Moments later, Mutyaba controlled a long ball by Bernard Muwanga and poked it calmly past Ssebulime as the former Vipers and Express forward completes his ha trick and in process put KCCA 5-1 up.By the time Alex Muhabi blew for halftime, Amuka looked disjointed and their body language as they went back into halftime was a sign of what was to come. Two minutes after restart, Sserwadda raced onto a loose back pass to round Ssebulime and finish into an empty net for KCCA’s fourth goal.On 50 minutes, Okello who had looked lively all day got his name onto the score-sheet for KCCA’s 6th on the day thanks to a curling shot from outside the area.On the hour mark, Okello who was handed the captain’s armband on the day got his second beating the advancing goalkeeper in a one against one incident and poking into an empty net after being set-free by Sserwadda.KCCA suffered an injury upset when Herbert Achai was stretchered off with a leg injury and was replaced by Poloto with 20 minutes of the clock. 10 minutes later, the winger who has been out of action for over a month joined in on the party with the 8th for KCCA.Poloto scores KCCA’s 8th on the dayAmuka Bright Stars scored their second and the game’s last through Bronson Nsubuga with seven minutes to the climax.KCCA has thus scored the most goals in this year’s knock out cup competition surpassing the 5 managed by Police FC on Sunday. The win means that Mike Mutebi’s side qualify for the round of 32 while Amuka are eliminated.Meanwhile, in the other game scheduled for Wrdnesday at the St Mary’s Stadium, visiting-Rushekere Growers were a no-show hence their game against Vipers postponed. The FUFA Competitions department will pronounce themselves on the matches not honoured in the nearby future.Round of 64 Results:Police FC 5-0 Boma FCBright Stars FC 4-0 Kazo Excel FCSC Villa 4-1 Lugazi MunicipalProline 3-1 Light S.SEast Land FC 1-3 Nyamityobora FCAdmin FC 3-1 Doves All Starts FCKyetume FC 3-1 UPDF FCSt Stephen FC 3-1 Budondo FCSoroti FC 1-3 Synergy FCNebbi Central FC 3-2 CATDA FCMbarara FC 0-2 Kirinya-Jinja SS FCBusia Young FC 0-2 Onduparaka FCTooro United 2-0 Entebbe FCBUL FC 2-1 Kataka FCFree Stars FC 2-1 Edgars Youth Academy FCBukedea Town Council FC 1-0 Dove FCKigezi FC 0-1 Kiboga YoungNdejje University FC 0-1 Kansai Plascon FCBumate FC 1 (5) – 1 (4) Ntinda FCU touch 1(4) – 1 (3) Mvara Boys FCMbarara City 0 (4) – 0 (3) MaroonsKiira United 1 (4) – 1 (5) St Mary’s NabweruMatches not physically played:*Wakiso Giants Vs Vision FC (*Vision FC failed to travel to Jinja)*Paidha Black Angels FC Vs Express FC (Not played because Paidha Black Angels arrived late at the venue and failed too, to provide security)*Calvary FC Vs Kabale Sharp FC (Not played because Kabale Sharp failed to travel to Northern Uganda)*Akadot FC Vs Kitara FC (Not played because Akadot reached venue late and failed to provide security as well)*URA FC Vs Jinja Municipal Council Hippos FC (Not played because Jinja Municipal Council Hippos failed to travel to Namboole Stadium)*Water Vs Saviour (Saviour failed to travel to Mutesa II Wankulukuku Stadium)*Vipers Vs Rushekere Growers (Rushskere Growers failed to travel to St Mary’s Kitende)Comments Tags: Amuka Bright StarsKCCA FCtopUganda Cuplast_img read more

SA troops for Central African Republic

first_img7 January 2013 President Jacob Zuma has authorised the deployment of 400 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers to the Central African Republic (CAR), his office said on Sunday. The deployment to the civil war-torn country is part of South Africa’s efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region. The deployment will end on 31 March. “The employed members of the SANDF will assist with capacity building of the CAR Defence Force and will also assist CAR with the planning and implementation of the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration processes,” the Presidency said in a statement. On 31 December, Zuma sent Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to the Central African Republic to assess the situation, which remains tense after the Seleka rebel coalition launched an armed campaign on 10 December. The rebels, who accuse President Francois Bozize of reneging on the 2008 Libreville Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by the government and the country’s three main rebel groups, and of cracking down on dissidents, have taken 10 northern and central towns in their advance on the capital, Bangui. The South African government has urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from the captured cities and cease any further advances towards Bangui. As a member of the African Union, South Africa said it rejected any attempt to seize power by force, and therefore supported sanctions and other measures against the perpetrators of any unconstitutional change of government. “We call on all parties to seek a peaceful solution by engaging constructively in political dialogue,” the Department of International relations said in a statement last week. “We welcome the reaffirmation by CAR President Francois Bozize to work towards a negotiated solution to the current crisis.” Source: SANews.gov.za – Xinhualast_img read more
