New year higher pay 2019 changes affecting small business

first_imgNEW YORK — Many small businesses will see their labour costs increase in 2019.Seventeen states are raising their minimum wages Jan. 1, and a number of others will follow suit later in the year. Some of the increases were scheduled by legislation passed in the last few years. Others are in response to the rising inflation rate. The minimum is also going up in some major cities, among them Oakland and other California cities. Many owners with minimum-wage workers also give raises to their other employees when there is a government-mandated increase. Bosses need to avert any resentment that could arise when some staffers get a bump-up and others don’t.Pay is also expected to be rising, possibly later in the year, for some salaried workers. The Labor Department is expected to issue early in 2019 its regulations on which employees must be paid overtime, and which are exempt. The Trump administration is rewriting rules written during the Obama administration that would have doubled the pay threshold at which workers would be exempt from overtime, to $47,476 from $23,660. An estimated 4.2 million people would have been able to begin earning OT under the rules. The new rules are expected to raise the threshold — the question still is, by how much? The overtime rules are most likely to affect workers with jobs like shift supervisor or assistant manager at restaurants and retailers or manufacturing companies. Many owners have already thought about how to protect their margins from a surge in labour costs. Some have said they plan to give affected staffers raises that would put them above the Labor Department threshold. Others have said they will pay these staffers hourly but limit how many hours a day or week they work.MILEAGE RATES GOING UPThe IRS has raised its standard mileage rate for deducting the cost of using a car for business during 2019; it will be 58 cents per mile, up 3.5 cents from 2018. The standard mileage rate is one of two methods for owners to account for how much they spend when they use a car for business; the second is based on actual expenses. Under that method an owner must calculate the percentage of miles the car is driven for business, and apply that percentage to expenses like lease payments, fuel, maintenance, repairs, insurance and depreciation.Under the new tax law, employees cannot claim a deduction for the use of their own cars on behalf of their companies._____For more small business news, insights and inspiration, sign up for our free weekly newsletter here: http://discover.ap.org/ssb_____Follow Joyce Rosenberg at www.twitter.com/JoyceMRosenberg . Mayawati attacks BJP govt over farmers cane dues

first_imgLucknow: BSP supremo Mayawati Monday hit out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over rising cane arrears to farmers, asking why it cannot act tough against the erring sugar mill owners. “How can the UP sugarcane farmers be happy and prosperous when their arrears amount to Rs. 10 thousand crores ? This is a matter to ponder on. Anti-farmers and pro-capitalist BJP government need not make wrong claims,” Mayawati said in a tweet. “Why is BJP not acting tough against the mill owners like the BSP government and getting all the arrears of the farmers cleared?” she asked. Social skills helped shape modern human face

first_imgThe evolution of modern human face may have been partly driven by our need for good social skills, according to a study. As large-brained, short-faced hominins, our faces are different from other, now extinct hominins, such as the Neanderthals, and our closest living relatives bonobos and chimpanzees, said researchers from the University of York in the UK. The study, published in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution, traced changes in the evolution of the face from the early African hominins to the appearance of modern human anatomy. Also Read – An income drop can harm brainThe researchers conclude that social communication has been somewhat overlooked as a factor underlying the modern human facial form. Our faces should be seen as the result of a combination of biomechanical, physiological and social influences, researchers said. They suggest that our faces evolved not only due to factors such as diet and climate, but possibly also to provide more opportunities for gesture and nonverbal communication. These are vital skills for establishing the large social networks which are believed to have helped Homo sapiens to survive, researchers said. Also Read – Shallu Jindal honoured with Mahatma Award”We can now use our faces to signal more than 20 different categories of emotion via the contraction or relaxation of muscles,” said Paul O’Higgins, a professor at the University of York. “It’s unlikely that our early human ancestors had the same facial dexterity as the overall shape of the face and the positions of the muscles were different,” O’Higgins said. Instead of the pronounced brow ridge of other hominins, humans developed a smooth forehead with more visible, hairy eyebrows capable of a greater range of movement. This, alongside our faces becoming more slender, allows us to express a wide range of subtle emotions – including recognition and sympathy. “We know that other factors such as diet, respiratory physiology and climate have contributed to the shape of the modern human face, but to interpret its evolution solely in terms of these factors would be an oversimplification.” The human face has been partly shaped by the mechanical demands of feeding and over the past 100,000 years our faces have been getting smaller as our developing ability to cook and process food led to a reduced need for chewing. This facial shrinking process has become particularly marked since the agricultural revolution, as we switched from being hunter gatherers to agriculturalists and then to living in cities – lifestyles that led to increasingly pre-processed foods and less physical effort. “Softer modern diets and industrialised societies may mean that the human face continues to decrease in size,” said O’Higgins. “There are limits on how much the human face can change however, for example breathing requires a sufficiently large nasal cavity,” he said. “However, within these limits, the evolution of the human face is likely to continue as long as our species survives, migrates and encounters new environmental and cultural conditions.”last_img read more

It was Adams’ eighth start of the season.Sophomore guard Ameryst Alston, who leads the team in scoring this season with 17 points per game, scored just 11 points, seven of which came at the free throw line.Michigan was led in scoring by junior guard Shannon Smith who scored a game-high 17 points. The Buckeyes will attempt to keep the momentum from win over their rival going Sunday, as they are scheduled to play Michigan State (12-7, 4-2) at 12:30 p.m. read more

Watch out for Borussia Dortmund this season in Europe

first_imgWe take a closer look at the many virtues that this Borussia Dortmund side has this season, they could compete for everything in Europe. The Borussia Dortmund board of directors have been doing things right at least for the last decade, they nearly conquered Europe back in 2013 with the guidance of Jürgen Klopp. They were in a small hiatus for a few years, but this season was key for them to get refreshed by many new talents and many well-established players are also responding very well to the challenge as Borussia Dortmund takes the Bundesliga by storm and does in the same fashion they have always done it historically. This is a squad that stays dynamic during the whole season, they always strive to practice the most offensive football one could ever hope for and they just keep discovering new talents every single year. The Dortmund supporters weren’t ever worried after Ousmane Dembele left to play for Barcelona, because the club’s scouting system is one of the best in the world and they quickly found a replacement who is even better than the Frenchman. We are going to talk about three key players who might transform this Borussia Dortmund side into a serious threat for any Champions League opponent they face this season.#SquadGoals pic.twitter.com/77NFtNAk8o— Borussia Dortmund 🇺🇸🇬🇧 (@BlackYellow) October 6, 2018Marco ReusBorussia Dortmund’s absolute leader, a man who has never left the institution that has always supported him when things got heavy for him.Reus has struggled with nasty injuries in the past, one even made him miss the World Cup in 2014 and prevented him to become a World Cup champion. The winger seems to be living a second youth before he turns 30 and he understands his role as the club’s frontman who should be good enough to take them very far in all competitions this season. He is the perfect role model for the generation of players who are also coming forward this season for the club, Marco Reus deserves to finally get this recognition as the leaders that he is.Paco Alcácer leads the Bundesliga in goals. He’s only played 81 minutes. 😱😱 pic.twitter.com/kOfGA2WHpn— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) October 8, 2018Paco AlcacerWhen Spanish striker Paco Alcacer first arrived in FC Barcelona last season, he suffered from the same problems that other strikers go through when they compete every day against Lionel Messi or Luis Suarez.Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson. The Valencia CF product wasn’t able to keep up with any of both players and decided to leave, he took the offer from Borussia Dortmund and it didn’t really take him a long time to adapt.Today in the Bundesliga, Alcacer is the undisputed top scorer so far in the season and he was exactly the kind of striker that the German club had been craving for such a long time. With already 6 goals in the competition, there is no doubt that Paco Alcacer will finish his season with the highest goal-tally of his career. The #Bundesliga after 7 MatchdaysTop scorer:▪️@paco93alcacer: ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️▪️Minutes played: 8⃣1⃣Most assists:▪️@Sanchooo10: 👟👟👟👟👟👟▪️ Minutes played: 2⃣1⃣4⃣#bvb pic.twitter.com/OlbmdFm0pc— Stefan Buczko (@StefanBuczko) October 6, 2018Jadon SanchoArguably the greatest discovery that Borussia Dortmund has done since Robert Lewandowski first arrived at their doorstep, English lad Jadon Sancho is the biggest sensation in European football right now alongside French wonder kid Kylian Mbappé.The Golden Boy award will be disputed by the PSG star and this young player who already has 7 assists in all competition for Borussia Dortmund, which are more than any other player on the continent.Sancho just was called-up to play for his country in the next international break, it’s a dream come true for a player who is still too young and needs to take his career slowly. There are no guarantees that manager Gareth Southgate will give him the first minutes for England, but traveling with the squad so young is already a great achievement for the kid.Emotional. Inspirational. Unbelievable.Going into international break on a high note 🙌📰 https://t.co/m7qiJAH0Rh pic.twitter.com/dvfHEQE3Mx— Borussia Dortmund 🇺🇸🇬🇧 (@BlackYellow) October 8, 2018Which other players would you add to Borussia Dortmund’s best this season? Sterling praises Sanchos work ethic

first_imgRaheem Sterling paid tribute to Jadon Sancho’s work ethic and insists he’s unsurprised on how quickly the teenager’s adapted at EnglandThe 18-year-old winger made his international debut for the senior England team in Friday’s goalless draw at Croatia by replacing Sterling for the final 12 minutes.Despite the short amount of time on the pitch, Sancho left observers impressed with his seamlessly transition into the Three Lions squad. But Sterling, who trained alongside the youngster at City before his switch to Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, insists that it is of no surprise to him.“He is a really good talent and someone I’ve thought highly of since the first time I saw him at Manchester City when he was training with us in pre-season,” said Sterling, according to the Irish Mirror.“I thought highly of him – his work ethic and what he does with the ball. I know him really well and he’s someone that is really modest but when he’s on the field he wants to express his ability.”Sterling also backed Sancho’s shock decision to leave for Germany last year.“For someone so young to back themselves to go abroad is a credit to them,” he added.“To go abroad so young and back yourself, that shows a lot about the person. He could have taken the easy route and stayed at City but he saw himself developing better.Jadon SanchoMerson believes Arsenal should sign Sancho Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho might be the perfect player to play for the Gunners, according to former England international Paul Merson.“That’s what it’s about in football – you have to judge your own situation and he did that perfectly and all credit to him.“He has knuckled down in Germany and, when you’re that age, it’s probably something you need. To have that seclusion and be by yourself a bit and to concentrate solely on football. I’m really happy for him.”After Friday’s match, the England squad had a break at the team hotel with Sterling and Sancho getting involved in a video game showdown between Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.Playing as Juventus, Sancho led the Italian side to a 3-1 win over Sterling’s PSG – which the latter certainly didn’t enjoy come the full-time whistle. We all know that friend 👋😂🤣#Sterling #Sancho #FIFA #FIFA19[🎥IG/sanchooo104] pic.twitter.com/eraKZXU4WY— Xtra Minute (@XtraminuteTV) October 14, 2018last_img read more
