Restless Pochettino holds key to Spurs progress

first_imgWolverhampton, United Kingdom | AFP | Dele Alli’s reaction to signing a new six-year deal with Tottenham this week underlined why Mauricio Pochettino is so valuable to the north London club amid claims the Argentine coach is growing restless.Victory at Wolves on Saturday would extend Spurs’ best start to a Premier League campaign since Pochettino took charge ahead of the 2014-15 season. That, though, tells only part of the story.Performances have too often fallen short of standards set in recent seasons, throwing focus on the failure to make any signings during the last transfer window. The after-effects of a gruelling World Cup campaign have taken a toll on a number of Pochettino’s squad, while Tottenham’s Champions League campaign already hangs in the balance.Add to that the continuing delays to Tottenham’s move back into a rebuilt White Hart Lane, and there is a growing sense the club is treading water right now.Speaking ahead of Monday’s home defeat to Manchester City, Pochettino admitted to feeling frustrated, conceding this was the worst he has felt since taking charge of the club.Pochettino acknowledged his side has made some progress, but insisted off-field distractions had diverted their focus away from winning trophies. It doesn’t help, then, that Real Madrid, long term admirers of the Argentinian, are now looking for a replacement for the sacked Julen Lopetegui.Pochettino’s future appeared secure when he signed a new five-year contract at the end of last season. But Tottenham would not be the first club to discover they have a fight on their hands if the La Liga giants decide to step up their interest in the manager. The central importance of Pochettino to Tottenham’s long-term plans, though, was reinforced by Alli’s glowing endorsement. The England midfielder became the latest member of Pochettino’s squad to sign a long-term deal this week and made it clear the Argentine was a major factor in his decision to put pen to paper.– In demand –“He is a massive part of wanting to be at this club,” said Alli after Wednesday’s win at West Ham in the League Cup.“The fans are amazing, the chairman, everyone — the whole club’s amazing.“But as players you work with the gaffer, you want to have a good relationship with the manager, and we all feel like we’ve got that here.“We all love the way we work, the style of play. We all want to be a part of it.“He’s done a lot for me so far and hopefully he can keep helping me to improve.”Share on: WhatsApp Pages: 1 2last_img read more

When will parts of Palm Beach County open up?

first_imgPalm Beach County officials are busy working on a strategy in collaboration with the Department of Health to open parts of the county. But when will that be?Palm Beach County leaders said last week that plans to reopen non-essential businesses will come in phases, but it won’t happen until the county reaches its peak of cases.Palm Beach County Vice Mayor Robert Weinroth is giving residents some insight into the county’s plans. In a Facebook post this week, Weinroth said they have identified a recent downward trend in hospitalization and coronavirus cases, which support the county beginning to slowly reopen in a “measured and phased approach.”Weinroth said the county’s effort to flatten the curve have been working over the last 30 days.“In the month, we have done that. We have seen a real result,” said Weinroth. He said the next phase the next phase, known as Phase 2, would slowly reopen parts of the county where people can still maintain CDC guidelines.“We have to do this with the idea that people have free will, and just because we open up a venue doesn’t mean you have to go,” said Weinroth. He says the proposed strategy in Phase 2 begins with reviewing relaxing restrictions to the following locations:1) Natural Areas and Parks2) Boat Ramps, Marinas and other water activities3) Golfing and Golf Courses4) BeachesThe vice mayor said the county is developing work groups that are meeting this week to “finalize the proposed rules, regulations and enforcement associated with the partial reopening of these areas.”On Thursday, Weinroth said an update will come from the county either Friday or early next week on when the public can see an actual plan for loosening some of the stay-at-home order restrictions.A key model used by White House said social distancing measures should continue into May or June for much of the country. The model shows Florida should be among the last state to lift so-called “stay-at-home” orders.“I think this is something that is best left at a local level,” said Weiroth in regard to the model used by the White House.Weinroth said it’s hard to lump all of Florida together with the difference in coronanvirus numbers from county-to-county.He said Palm Beach County has been working closely with the health department and other experts on how to safely take action.“It is not so easy just turning on a switch,” said Weinroth.last_img read more

England bank on Barclay for Italian job

first_img Barclay Brown (Hallamshire, Yorkshire), winner of the inaugural North of England under 14 Junior Open Stroke Play Championship at South Moor Golf Club recently, has been selected among four players for the Italian International under 16 Championship at Biella Golf Club on 2nd – 4th September. The other three are Alex Fitzpatrick (Hallamshire, Yorkshire), Rhys Nevin-Wharton (Sandiway, Cheshire) and Luke Northwood (Kenilworth, Warwickshire). Brown, only 13 years old, carded a two-under-par opening round of 70 to lead by three at South Moor then added a 74 before torrential rain and thunderstorms made the Durham course unplayable and the tournament was reduced to 36 holes. Fitzpatrick, 15, the younger brother of 2013 US Amateur champion Matthew Fitzpatrick, finished third in last year’s Douglas Johns Trophy but went two better this year, winning by one stroke. Nevin-Wharton, 16, finished tied third in the Northern Counties Boys Qualifying, fourth in the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and equal fifth in the Cheshire Stroke Play Championship. Northwood, 15 (image copyright Leaderboard Photography), a member of the England Regional under 16 Coaching Squad for the West Midlands, finished runner-up in this year’s McGregor Trophy, the English Boys under 16 Championship, at Radcliffe-on-Trent and like Brown and Fitzpatrick, this will be his maiden overseas assignment for England Golf. The Italian under 16 Championship is played over 72 holes of stroke play with a cut after 36, the leading 40 players and ties qualifying for the final two rounds. 27 Aug 2014 England bank on Barclay for Italian job last_img read more

SA troops for Central African Republic

first_img7 January 2013 President Jacob Zuma has authorised the deployment of 400 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers to the Central African Republic (CAR), his office said on Sunday. The deployment to the civil war-torn country is part of South Africa’s efforts to bring about peace and stability in the region. The deployment will end on 31 March. “The employed members of the SANDF will assist with capacity building of the CAR Defence Force and will also assist CAR with the planning and implementation of the disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration processes,” the Presidency said in a statement. On 31 December, Zuma sent Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula to the Central African Republic to assess the situation, which remains tense after the Seleka rebel coalition launched an armed campaign on 10 December. The rebels, who accuse President Francois Bozize of reneging on the 2008 Libreville Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by the government and the country’s three main rebel groups, and of cracking down on dissidents, have taken 10 northern and central towns in their advance on the capital, Bangui. The South African government has urged all parties to immediately cease hostilities, withdraw from the captured cities and cease any further advances towards Bangui. As a member of the African Union, South Africa said it rejected any attempt to seize power by force, and therefore supported sanctions and other measures against the perpetrators of any unconstitutional change of government. “We call on all parties to seek a peaceful solution by engaging constructively in political dialogue,” the Department of International relations said in a statement last week. “We welcome the reaffirmation by CAR President Francois Bozize to work towards a negotiated solution to the current crisis.” Source: SANews.gov.za – Xinhualast_img read more

Arthur the miracle Pygmy goat

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest A healthy and normal birth is just the first in step raising livestock. Anyone who has ever had livestock born on their property knows that the fun has just started but the work is not over. The eight Pygmy goat kids born in my barn in late February were a tremendous blessing. Eight was the largest number of kids I have ever had born from just three does. I have enjoyed caring for the kids and playing with them, but it has not all been fun. With an increase in numbers, of course comes an increase in the chance for things to go wrong. The first sign of trouble was baby goat with scours. I assumed poor Arthur just had an upset tummy so I treated him with products I had on hand designed to rectify issues like his. After two days of treatment, Arthur wasn’t any better so I stopped by my vet’s office and purchased another treatment designed to prevent scours. The scours went away, but a few days later, I found Arthur lying in the barn with a fever of 105.5 degrees Farenheit.Because I found Arthur in this state on a Sunday, I treated him myself with products that my vet had sold me to keep on hand for such occasions. By the next day, Arthur’s fever was gone, but he had developed another startling symptom — seizures. A trip to the vet with Arthur in tow was definitely in order. Before Arthur’s scheduled appointment, a previously undetected abscess blew out of the top of Arthur’s head. Both the vet and myself were relieved to have a visible source for some Arthur’s symptoms. My vet prescribed additional treatments for Arthur based on a diagnosis of the abscess and a guess that his seizures might have been caused by a Vitamin B deficiency. Two days later, Arthur’s fever was still gone, his appetite was better but his seizures were more frequent and severe. I called my vet back with the sad news that I thought Arthur was probably going to need to put out of his misery. The seizures were pretty constant and violent at that point. My vet wanted to try one more treatment and boy am I glad I took his advice. After another course of antibiotics and steroids, Arthur is symptom free of seizures and infection. Our best guess is that the abscess was the result of a rare infection from his disbudding (dehorning) procedure and that perhaps, because baby goats’ skulls are not yet fused, the infection got into his brain and caused the seizures.Whatever the cause, I’m happy to report that Arthur is back to normal. I’m thankful that I had access to excellent veterinary care to help me through this very rare side affect — infection — of the very necessary procedure of disbudding. The even more rare side affect of the infection — seizures — could not have been overcome without the advice and care given by my vet.Thank goodness for large animal veterinarians that are willing to take the time and go the extra step to help their customers and patients. Be kind to your local veterinarians. You never know when they just might help you save a life.last_img read more
