LONDON — The Latest on Brexit (all times local):9 a.m.Britain’s envoy to Germany says the European Union might help avert a “no-deal” Brexit if it’s prepared to shift its position on the terms of future border controls with Ireland.Britain’s ambassador in Berlin, Sebastian Wood, says that the current “backstop ” solution is opposed both by U.K. lawmakers who want the country to leave the EU, and those who don’t.In an interview with German public broadcaster ARD, Wood noted that Britain wouldn’t have the right to get out of the backstop unilaterally “and many have noticed this.”He said “this might be the most important question in the coming days and weeks, and the EU can perhaps be a little helpful in that area.”___8:50 a.m.British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a no-confidence vote a day after Parliament rejected her Brexit deal by an historic margin.May is battling to save her job after staking her political reputation on a last-ditch effort to win support for the divorce agreement she negotiated with the European Union. Though defeat was widely expected, the scale of the rout — 432-202 — was devastating for May’s leadership.Immediately after the vote, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn tabled a no-confidence motion, saying it will give Parliament a chance to give its verdict “on the sheer incompetence of this government.”Still, most analysts predict May will survive because her Conservative Party and the Democratic Unionist Party, which supports it, are expected to vote against the motion.___8:15 a.m.European Union Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier says the bloc is stepping up preparations for a chaotic no-deal departure of Britain from the bloc after the rejection of the draft withdrawal deal in London left the EU “fearing more than ever that there is a risk” of a cliff-edge departure.Barnier regretted Westminster’s massive rejection of the deal he negotiated with the government of British Prime Minister Theresa May and said that any future deal would still have to include approving the withdrawal agreement. He said Wednesday that “whatever happens, ratification of the withdrawal agreement is necessary. It is a precondition.”He said that a linked political declaration offered “possible options” for further talks. The Associated Press

In order to support the higher cost of rail over pipelines, the differentials need to be higher than US$15-$20 per barrel, Imperial says. On a conference call to discuss Suncor’s fourth-quarter results, Williams said the production cuts are also having a long-term negative affect on investor confidence in Canada. The criticism came as Suncor reported a $280-million net loss in the fourth quarter of 2018, in part due to the very price discounts the curtailments were designed to reduce.Calgary-based Suncor said its average realized price in Canadian dollars for raw bitumen in the quarter was just $7.96 per barrel, versus $42.80 in the fourth quarter of 2017. Its average realized price for upgraded synthetic crude was $46.07, compared with $70.55.“If you look at what’s happened, the differential corrected _ and over-corrected _ very quickly and the unintended consequence of that is … rail economics are severely damaged and a lot of the rail movements are stopping or have stopped,” said Williams.“That’s going to have the opposite impact to what the government wants.”The difference in price between Western Canadian Select bitumen-blend oil and New York benchmark West Texas Intermediate widened to as much as US$52 per barrel in October, but shrunk to single digits in December and January. CALGARY, A.B. – Suncor Energy Inc. is calling on the Alberta government to make an earlier-than-planned exit from the oil curtailment program it enacted on Jan. 1 because of its “unintended consequences.”CEO Steve Williams says the program designed to draw down crude storage and free up space on export pipelines has worked too well, reducing local price discounts to the point that shipping crude by rail into the United States is no longer financially sustainable. The same charge was levelled last week by Imperial Oil Ltd. CEO Rich Kruger, who said his firm would cut its crude-by-rail shipments to near zero this month, a major setback in oil movements as it had been responsible for about half of Canada’s rail shipments in December.
New Delhi: Sugar production rose by 6 per cent to 273.47 lakh tonne till March 15 of the current marketing year ending September 2019, helped by higher output in Maharashtra and Karnataka where mills started their operations early, according to industry data. The country had produced 258.20 lakh tonne sugar in the year-ago period, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) said in a statement. “During 2018-19 sugar season, 527 sugar mills were in operation and they have produced 273.47 lakh tonne of sugar till March 15, 2019,” the ISMA said. Also Read – Thermal coal import may surpass 200 MT this fiscalAs many as 154 mills have stopped crushing and 373 sugar mills are continuing their crushing operations. Mills in Maharashtra and Karnataka are closing fast and their crushing season is on the verge of closing. According to the ISMA, sugar production in Maharashtra till March 15 was 100.08 lakh tonne as against 93.84 lakh tonne in the year-ago period. In Uttar Pradesh, production was almost flat at 84.14 lakh tonne compared with 84.39 lakh tonnes in the corresponding period of the 2017-18 marketing year. Sugar production in Karnataka stood at 42.45 lakh tonne as against 35.10 lakh tonnes. The ISMA had earlier pegged the country’s sugar production at 307 lakh tonne in 2018-19, down from 325 lakh tonnes in 2017-18 marketing year.
Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James addresses an official during a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 10. at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. Cleveland won, 118-111.Credit: Courtesy of TNSWhen LeBron James returned to the Cleveland Cavaliers, he knew the team would have an adjustment period.“It’s something that I was ready for,” James told ESPN.com on Nov. 24. “I knew that it was going to be my biggest challenge of my career thus far, so I accept the challenge, and when we lose, I take full responsibility. When we win, the team wins. That’s what it’s about.”And a transition it has been. Through their first 16 games, the new “Big 3” of Kyrie Irving, Kevin Love and James have gone 9-7 and currently sit in sixth place in a weak Eastern Conference. However, it takes time for everything to play out.But what is everything though? Everything consists of team chemistry to off-court relationships and both offensive and defensive playmaking. James knew that the Cavs would go through all of this. And it’s because he’s done it before. Many fans and media expected the Cavaliers to start the regular season being a great team, and with James’ first “true” point guard in Irving, many thought this team could rely on its playmaking alone.Despite having a 5-3 record through the middle of November, the Cavs lost four straight, causing many to wonder if coach David Blatt was the right coach for one of the most talented teams in the NBA. Some fans have even wanted Blatt fired, as James has taken on a coaching role because Blatt has never played or coached in the NBA before.Blatt played collegiately at Princeton and then went on to play and coach in Israel, as well as coach the Russian national team in the 2012 Olympic games, leading the team to a bronze medal. But the NBA is different from any place Blatt has coached before, and it shows.Coming into Tuesday’s game against Milwaukee the Cavs, despite being 11th in the NBA in points per game with 103.3, ranked 24th in total rebounds per game with 41.1. Defensively, it ranks 17th in total points allowed per game with 99.3. They are also 27th in assists allowed per game with 24.8.Love was also on the record saying that his new team was going to have a transition period.“It’s going to take a little bit of time, but we’re going to clean this up, I guarantee you that,” Love told ESPN.com. “Team morale is great. We get along, but we know we have a ton of work to do.”Through everything the Cavs have gone through this season, many fail to mention that James and his former team, the Miami Heat, had a transition period of nearly a month and a half, before the team started to get a feel for one another’s style of play.It wasn’t until Dec. 2, 2010, when the Heat played the Cavs, in what was James’ first game against his former team, that the Heat turned the corner. Despite Cleveland going into that game with two straight wins, the Heat beat the Cavs, 118-90. After that, everything seemed to click for the winning team. From there, the Heat continued their three-game winning streak and won 20 of their next 21 games. Before going on that run and heading into 2011 at 25-9, some were calling for the firing of coach Erik Spoelstra.Despite taking the Heat to the NBA Finals in his first two seasons coaching the team, its start was something many didn’t expect. In their first 18 games together, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and James went 10-8, with key wins coming against the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers, who both made the playoffs that season. Rumors had spread that Heat President Pat Riley would relieve Spoelstra of coaching duties and take over. Instead, Riley did nothing, and the Heat lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals that season.Sixteen games in, the Cavs have key wins against the Atlanta Hawks, Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards and are still going through some growing pains, but have won four-straight.But like the Heat, it doesn’t matter what is going on now, the future is more important. That’s why people say it’s not how you preform in the first half of the season, it’s how you preform in May and June.So while fans may be worried about how the Cavs preform, remember that it just takes time.Time is one of the hardest things to live with as a sports fan because as a team is going through a rebuilding phase, the product you see on the floor isn’t necessarily the product you’ll see at the end of the day.By the beginning of January, I guarantee Blatt and the Cavs will have figured something out and will continue to fight toward a potential birth in the NBA Finals. Only so much can be learned during training camp, and time for adjustments in the regular season has to be learned in practice and during in-game situations.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has jumped to Mesut Ozil and Ilkay Gundogan’s defence in the fallout from Germany’s dreadful World Cup campaignThe midfield duo caused controversy before the start of the tournament following their meeting with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan in London. Both players are of Turkish descent and Gundogan later insisted that there was no political intent behind the meeting, although Ozil has chosen to remain silent on the matter. The Arsenal playmaker has been on the receiving end of most the criticism with Germany’s general manager Oliver Bierhoff even claiming that Ozil should have been left out of their World Cup squad after their first group stage exit in 80 years. But Klopp has called for an end to the nonsense and backed Gundogan’s claims that their meeting with the Turkish president was innocent.Report: Origi cause Klopp injury concerns George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Divock Origi injury in today’s game against Newcastle is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.Perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Italy…“The intelligent people of this country demand tolerance. And the others should shut up and not question the boys,” Klopp told Sport Bild, via SportsKeeda.“Both were certainly not very well advised in this matter. Older, more experienced people should have helped them there.“We should not forget that the two of them have Turkish roots even though they grew up here in Germany.“But it is the same as always: the one who cries the loudest is the one who hears the most. But that’s never been my thing.”Ozil was unable to either score or have an assist for Germany in his two starts at the World Cup, while Gundogan made just the one substitute appearance in the national side’s only win of the competition against Sweden.

Manuel Carrillo III/Roadshow One of the fringe benefits of having an electric car is that for the most part, they require much less maintenance than a comparable vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. Tesla is taking advantage of this after crunching the data on the last few years of service and vehicle data by moving away from a recommended yearly service program to one that only requires vehicles to come in when parts need to be replaced. This probably sounds crazy if you’ve never spent a significant amount of time with an electric vehicle, but think about it like this: What are the most common service items on your ICE-powered car? Oil changes, brakes and tires. Add in things like accessory belts and timing belts that degrade with use and heat and all of a sudden you have a pretty full maintenance schedule. An EV doesn’t have engine oil to change, nor do the motors produce the same kind of heat that gasoline or diesel-powered engines do. Parts aren’t subjected to the same kind of temperature extremes. With brakes, many EV drivers use their vehicles with high levels of regenerative braking. This uses the drivetrain to slow the car and recharge the battery and saves significant wear on the vehicle’s braking components. Brake fluid, however, will still be checked every two years for water contamination.Add in the fact that Teslas are internet-connected and have robust remote diagnostic capabilities and a yearly check-up seems even less necessary. Tesla representatives are quick to point out that this shift in service methodology has nothing to do with a Tesla’s warranty, and vehicles that need service can get it.Tesla will stop pushing its prepaid maintenance plans for customers, but will still honor the plans that have been sold. It seems likely that the “as-necessary” service system will end up being cheaper than a prepaid plan for customers anyway.

Boring Company,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. Logan Moy/CNET Flamethrowers, including those from Elon Musk’s Boring Company, are causing concern among New York lawmakers. The New York State Senate passed a bill this month banning the possession of flamethrowers for recreational use. Having one would be a Class E felony, which could lead to up to four years in prison, according to a CNBC report on Friday. “Elon Musk’s Boring Company released a new flamethrower which sold out of all 20,000 within days, without any concern to the training of the purchasers or their reasons for buying,” lawmakers said in a release. “Allowing the general public to access this type of machine is extremely problematic.”Last year, Musk tweeted that the company changed the name of the product to “Not a Flamethrower” because of “recent regulatory/customs rules enacted to inhibit transport of anything called a Flamethrower.”The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sens. John Brooks and David Carlucci, passed the Senate 48-13 on June 11. It hasn’t yet been voted on in the Assembly. The New York State Senate and The Boring Company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. This isn’t the first time lawmakers have tried to ban the Boring Company’s flamethrowers. Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, a Democrat from California, said last year he planned to introduce state legislation blocking sales of the flamethrowers to the public. In a development that signals the end of the Sahara India-Mirach Capital saga, the US-based Mirach Capital Group has returned the $2.65 million it received from Sahara, to the SEBI-Sahara Fund.As per the agreement signed between the two sides, Sahara underwrote Mirach’s expenditure related to legal fees, accounting and transaction related charges. ReutersIn a bid to clarify its stand, Mirach said it sent multiple requests asking for wiring instructions for the SEBI-Sahara Fund account, which went unanswered, prompting Saransh Sharma-led Mirach Capital Group to remit the funds via mail, the company said in a statement issued on Wednesday.”Though incurring expenses to date of $1,075,000 in related closing costs, Mirach has remitted the full amount back to Sahara, in an effort to show the Honorable Supreme Court of India the group stands willing to incur costs while waiting for a fair ruling on February 20th,” the statement added. In a separate letter, Sharma informed the SEBI, the amicus curiae and Sahara representatives about the remittance, reports PTI.Sharma added that a bank would contact all applicable parties within the week to confirm the blocked and earmarked funds being available towards completing the initially embarked loan transaction, which would however, be only applicable in the case of Sahara selling its hotel properties.”Mirach stands ready, willing and able to close this transaction in an expedited manner should the Apex court and SEBI wish to see a swift resolution in favor of the creditors who have waited several years for some form of solace,” read the letter.Full Purchase of HotelsThe letter said that Mirach is ready, willing and able to close the agreed deal, if the Supreme Court and SEBI decide to go for a swift resolution of the case, which has seen Sahara’s Chairman Subrata Roy and two of his senior colleagues, stay behind bars for almost a year now.The letter stressed that the group and its investor syndicate was willing to close the deal concerning Sahara’s assets, while seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter. ReutersThe Supreme Court has stipulated 20 February as the deadline for the closure of the Sahara-Mirach deal. However, the transaction fell apart after Bank of America put out a disclaimer stating that it was not part of the transaction as claimed by Mirach.Sahara alleged that its internal verification has found the bank document to be ‘forged’.Mirach denied the allegations, and both sides threatened legal action. Mirach said in its statement that it has “made an offer on all of the assets previously involved in the loan package, which could provide Roy and his creditors relief in the form of $2.05 billion.”

.UNHCR Goodwill ambassador Cate Blanchett Wednesday warned of a “race against time” to protect Rohingya refugees from the worst impacts of the upcoming monsoon season in Bangladesh.”Heavy rains, potential cyclones and adverse weather conditions are threatening to put more than one hundred thousand Rohingya refugees living in congested settlements in Cox’s Bazaar district at serious risk in the coming months,” she said in Geneva.Blanchett, on return from a visit to Bangladesh this week, called for urgent action to support UNHCR and its partners working with Bangladesh government to avoid an “emergency within an emergency”, an UNHCR press release issued in Geneva on Wednesday said.Since August 2017 over 671,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have sought safety in Bangladesh.”The Rohingya refugees have already experienced targeted violence, human rights abuses and horrific journeys…They have shown unimaginable resilience and courage,” Blanchett said. She added, “But now, as the monsoon season approaches, the government of Bangladesh, supported by UNHCR and its partners, are in a race against time to ensure the refugees are as safe as they can be to deal with potential floods and landslides.”Calling for the international community to show solidarity and share the responsibility of this crisis with Bangladesh government Blanchett said the people of Bangladesh and host communities have been the first to respond to this crisis.”But I cannot stress how much more help is needed for these vulnerable stateless refugees, the majority of whom are women and children,” she said describing it as the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world.Blanchett said the Rohingys are a stateless minority and the people and government of Bangladesh have shown tremendous generosity and hospitality in the face of this influx.Kevin J Allen, Head of UNHCR’s emergency operation in Cox’s Bazaar said, “Bangladesh saved thousands of lives when it opened its borders and arms to Rohingya refugees.””It is now critical that we stand firmly by Bangladesh and the refugees we serve to protect them from cyclonic winds and heavy rains,” Kevin said.UNHCR is working to build dignified and decent lives for the stateless Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, including access to healthcare, education, shelter and self-reliance.The solutions to this refugee crisis lie in Myanmar, and UNHCR has therefore called on Myanmar to create conditions in Rakhine State that would permit the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of refugees who voluntarily choose to return to their homes.
A youth cries over the coffin of Nery Otoniel Gomez Rivas, 17, whose body was pulled from the volcanic ash during the eruption of the Volcan de Fuego, which in Spanish means Volcano of Fire, during his wake at the main park of the town San Juan Alotenango, Guatemala on 4 June. Photo: APGuatemalan authorities have increased the confirmed death toll from the eruption of the Volcano of Fire to 69 as officials suspended the search until dawn on Tuesday.Fanuel Garcia is the director of Guatemala’s National Institute of Forensic Sciences and he announced the higher death toll late Monday. He said only 17 of the dead have been identified so far.The burning ash and mud that engulfed villages on the volcano’s flanks Sunday left many victims unrecognizable. They will have to be identified through DNA testing or other means.A lack of electricity in the most heavily hit zone makes safely searching at night impossible.Rescuers pulled survivors and bodies from the charred aftermath of the powerful eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire a disaster that caught residents of remote mountain hamlets off guard, with little or no time to flee to safety.Using shovels and backhoes, emergency workers dug through the debris and mud, perilous labour on smouldering terrain still hot enough to melt shoe soles a day after the volcano exploded in a hail of ash, smoke and molten rock.Bodies were so thickly coated with ash that they looked like statues, and rescuers were forced to use sledgehammers to break through the roofs of houses buried in debris up to their rooflines to try to see if anyone was trapped inside. In the afternoon, Fanuel Garcia, director of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences, said 62 bodies had been recovered and 13 of those had been identified. Guatemala’s national disaster agency later raised the toll to 69.“It is very difficult for us to identify them because some of the dead lost their features or their fingerprints” from the red-hot flows, Garcia said. “We are going to have to resort to other methods … and if possible take DNA samples to identify them.”Hilda Lopez said her mother and sister were still missing after the slurry of hot gas, ash and rock roared into her village of San Miguel Los Lotes, just below the mountain’s flanks.“We were at a party, celebrating the birth of a baby, when one of the neighbors shouted at us to come out and see the lava that was coming,” the distraught woman said. “We didn’t believe it, and when we went out the hot mud was already coming down the street.”“My mother was stuck there, she couldn’t get out,” said Lopez, weeping and holding her face in her hands. Her husband, Joel Gonzalez, said his father had also been unable to escape and was believed to be “buried back there, at the house.”Guatemalan authorities say they had been closely monitoring the Volcano of Fire, one of Central America’s most active, after activity picked up around 6 a.m. Sunday. The volcano has registered a number of minor eruptions over the years, and no evacuations were ordered as scientific experts reported the activity was decreasing.Guatemala’s disaster agency, Conred, issued a number of standard precautions, advising people to wear protective face masks, clean their rooftops of ash once the eruption was over and cover any food and water intended for human consumption. It also said to heed any recommendations from authorities. Guatemala City’s international airport was closed due to the danger to planes.Conred spokesman David de Leon said that around 2:00pm the volcano registered a new, more powerful explosion.Soon, searing flows of lava, ash and rock mixed with water and debris were gushing down the volcano’s flanks, blocking roads and burning homes.“It traveled much faster. It arrived in communities right when the evacuation alerts were being sent out,” de Leon said.Authorities scrambled to issue an evacuation order. Some communities emptied out safely. But in places like Los Lotes and the village of El Rodeo, about eight miles (12 kilometers) downslope from the crater, it was too late for many. The fast-moving flows overtook people in homes and streets with temperatures reaching as high as 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit (700 Celsius), and hot ash and volcanic gases that can cause rapid asphyxiation.Rafael Letran, a resident of El Rodeo, criticized Conred for not evacuating communities earlier.“When the lava was already here they passed by in their pickup trucks yelling at us to leave, but the cars did not stop to pick up the people,” Letran said. “The government is good at stealing, but when it comes to helping people they lack spark.”De Leon said the disaster agency followed protocol.“As soon as we received the information around 6:00am that the volcano was in an eruptive phase, the protocol was initiated to verify with different sectors and also talk to the communities, to community leaders. … We had the information from our scientific service, and they told us the trend was that the activity was diminishing,” he said.In El Rodeo on Monday, heavily armed soldiers wearing blue masks to avoid breathing in ash stood guard behind yellow tape cordoning off the disaster scene. Helmeted workers carried bodies away on stretchers, and smoke was still rising from some parts of the ashen landscape strewn with boulders and other debris.President Jimmy Morales traveled to survey the disaster area.Emergency crews in helicopters managed to pull at least 10 people alive from areas cut off by the flows. Conred said 3,271 people had been evacuated.
