Tesla eliminates service schedules moves to an asneeded model

Manuel Carrillo III/Roadshow One of the fringe benefits of having an electric car is that for the most part, they require much less maintenance than a comparable vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. Tesla is taking advantage of this after crunching the data on the last few years of service and vehicle data by moving away from a recommended yearly service program to one that only requires vehicles to come in when parts need to be replaced. This probably sounds crazy if you’ve never spent a significant amount of time with an electric vehicle, but think about it like this: What are the most common service items on your ICE-powered car? Oil changes, brakes and tires. Add in things like accessory belts and timing belts that degrade with use and heat and all of a sudden you have a pretty full maintenance schedule. An EV doesn’t have engine oil to change, nor do the motors produce the same kind of heat that gasoline or diesel-powered engines do. Parts aren’t subjected to the same kind of temperature extremes. With brakes, many EV drivers use their vehicles with high levels of regenerative braking. This uses the drivetrain to slow the car and recharge the battery and saves significant wear on the vehicle’s braking components. Brake fluid, however, will still be checked every two years for water contamination.Add in the fact that Teslas are internet-connected and have robust remote diagnostic capabilities and a yearly check-up seems even less necessary. Tesla representatives are quick to point out that this shift in service methodology has nothing to do with a Tesla’s warranty, and vehicles that need service can get it.Tesla will stop pushing its prepaid maintenance plans for customers, but will still honor the plans that have been sold. It seems likely that the “as-necessary” service system will end up being cheaper than a prepaid plan for customers anyway.last_img read more

Boring Companys flamethrowers could be banned if New York bill passes

Boring Company,I’m shocked — shocked! — to learn that stores are turning Labor Day into an excuse to sell stuff. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. Google Express is having a big sale as well, one that includes deals on game consoles, AirPods, iPhones, laptops and more.Below I’ve rounded up a handful of individual items I consider to be the cream of the crop, followed by a handy reference guide to other Labor Day sales. Keep in mind, of course, that products may sell out at any time, even if the sale itself is still running. This is for the second-gen AirPods with the wireless charging case. Can’t imagine these will last long at this price, so if you’re interested, act fast. The problem with most entry-level laptops: They come with mechanical hard drives. That makes for a mighty slow Windows experience. This Lenovo model features a 128GB solid-state drive, so it should be pretty quick to boot and load software, even with its basic processor. Plus, it has a DVD-burner! Specs include an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM, a 256GB solid-state drive and a 15.6-inch display. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. Logan Moy/CNET Flamethrowers, including those from Elon Musk’s Boring Company, are causing concern among New York lawmakers. The New York State Senate passed a bill this month banning the possession of flamethrowers for recreational use. Having one would be a Class E felony, which could lead to up to four years in prison, according to a CNBC report on Friday. “Elon Musk’s Boring Company released a new flamethrower which sold out of all 20,000 within days, without any concern to the training of the purchasers or their reasons for buying,” lawmakers said in a release. “Allowing the general public to access this type of machine is extremely problematic.”Last year, Musk tweeted that the company changed the name of the product to “Not a Flamethrower” because of “recent regulatory/customs rules enacted to inhibit transport of anything called a Flamethrower.”The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sens. John Brooks and David Carlucci, passed the Senate 48-13 on June 11. It hasn’t yet been voted on in the Assembly. The New York State Senate and The Boring Company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. This isn’t the first time lawmakers have tried to ban the Boring Company’s flamethrowers. Assemblyman Miguel Santiago, a Democrat from California, said last year he planned to introduce state legislation blocking sales of the flamethrowers to the public. Originally published June 21, 2:04 p.m. PT.Update, 3:48 p.m.: Adds information from New York State Senate press release. SaharaMirach Deal Falls Through Dampens Efforts to Secure Subrata Roys Release

first_imgIn a development that signals the end of the Sahara India-Mirach Capital saga, the US-based Mirach Capital Group has returned the $2.65 million it received from Sahara, to the SEBI-Sahara Fund.As per the agreement signed between the two sides, Sahara underwrote Mirach’s expenditure related to legal fees, accounting and transaction related charges. ReutersIn a bid to clarify its stand, Mirach said it sent multiple requests asking for wiring instructions for the SEBI-Sahara Fund account, which went unanswered, prompting Saransh Sharma-led Mirach Capital Group to remit the funds via mail, the company said in a statement issued on Wednesday.”Though incurring expenses to date of $1,075,000 in related closing costs, Mirach has remitted the full amount back to Sahara, in an effort to show the Honorable Supreme Court of India the group stands willing to incur costs while waiting for a fair ruling on February 20th,” the statement added. In a separate letter, Sharma informed the SEBI, the amicus curiae and Sahara representatives about the remittance, reports PTI.Sharma added that a bank would contact all applicable parties within the week to confirm the blocked and earmarked funds being available towards completing the initially embarked loan transaction, which would however, be only applicable in the case of Sahara selling its hotel properties.”Mirach stands ready, willing and able to close this transaction in an expedited manner should the Apex court and SEBI wish to see a swift resolution in favor of the creditors who have waited several years for some form of solace,” read the letter.Full Purchase of HotelsThe letter said that Mirach is ready, willing and able to close the agreed deal, if the Supreme Court and SEBI decide to go for a swift resolution of the case, which has seen Sahara’s Chairman Subrata Roy and two of his senior colleagues, stay behind bars for almost a year now.The letter stressed that the group and its investor syndicate was willing to close the deal concerning Sahara’s assets, while seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention in the matter. ReutersThe Supreme Court has stipulated 20 February as the deadline for the closure of the Sahara-Mirach deal. However, the transaction fell apart after Bank of America put out a disclaimer stating that it was not part of the transaction as claimed by Mirach.Sahara alleged that its internal verification has found the bank document to be ‘forged’.Mirach denied the allegations, and both sides threatened legal action. Mirach said in its statement that it has “made an offer on all of the assets previously involved in the loan package, which could provide Roy and his creditors relief in the form of $2.05 billion.”last_img read more

UNHCR envoy calls for more support for Rohingys

first_img.UNHCR Goodwill ambassador Cate Blanchett Wednesday warned of a “race against time” to protect Rohingya refugees from the worst impacts of the upcoming monsoon season in Bangladesh.”Heavy rains, potential cyclones and adverse weather conditions are threatening to put more than one hundred thousand Rohingya refugees living in congested settlements in Cox’s Bazaar district at serious risk in the coming months,” she said in Geneva.Blanchett, on return from a visit to Bangladesh this week, called for urgent action to support UNHCR and its partners working with Bangladesh government to avoid an “emergency within an emergency”, an UNHCR press release issued in Geneva on Wednesday said.Since August 2017 over 671,000 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar have sought safety in Bangladesh.”The Rohingya refugees have already experienced targeted violence, human rights abuses and horrific journeys…They have shown unimaginable resilience and courage,” Blanchett said. She added, “But now, as the monsoon season approaches, the government of Bangladesh, supported by UNHCR and its partners, are in a race against time to ensure the refugees are as safe as they can be to deal with potential floods and landslides.”Calling for the international community to show solidarity and share the responsibility of this crisis with Bangladesh government Blanchett said the people of Bangladesh and host communities have been the first to respond to this crisis.”But I cannot stress how much more help is needed for these vulnerable stateless refugees, the majority of whom are women and children,” she said describing it as the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world.Blanchett said the Rohingys are a stateless minority and the people and government of Bangladesh have shown tremendous generosity and hospitality in the face of this influx.Kevin J Allen, Head of UNHCR’s emergency operation in Cox’s Bazaar said, “Bangladesh saved thousands of lives when it opened its borders and arms to Rohingya refugees.””It is now critical that we stand firmly by Bangladesh and the refugees we serve to protect them from cyclonic winds and heavy rains,” Kevin said.UNHCR is working to build dignified and decent lives for the stateless Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, including access to healthcare, education, shelter and self-reliance.The solutions to this refugee crisis lie in Myanmar, and UNHCR has therefore called on Myanmar to create conditions in Rakhine State that would permit the safe, dignified and sustainable repatriation of refugees who voluntarily choose to return to their homes.last_img read more

Guatemala volcano death toll up to 69

first_imgA youth cries over the coffin of Nery Otoniel Gomez Rivas, 17, whose body was pulled from the volcanic ash during the eruption of the Volcan de Fuego, which in Spanish means Volcano of Fire, during his wake at the main park of the town San Juan Alotenango, Guatemala on 4 June. Photo: APGuatemalan authorities have increased the confirmed death toll from the eruption of the Volcano of Fire to 69 as officials suspended the search until dawn on Tuesday.Fanuel Garcia is the director of Guatemala’s National Institute of Forensic Sciences and he announced the higher death toll late Monday. He said only 17 of the dead have been identified so far.The burning ash and mud that engulfed villages on the volcano’s flanks Sunday left many victims unrecognizable. They will have to be identified through DNA testing or other means.A lack of electricity in the most heavily hit zone makes safely searching at night impossible.Rescuers pulled survivors and bodies from the charred aftermath of the powerful eruption of Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire a disaster that caught residents of remote mountain hamlets off guard, with little or no time to flee to safety.Using shovels and backhoes, emergency workers dug through the debris and mud, perilous labour on smouldering terrain still hot enough to melt shoe soles a day after the volcano exploded in a hail of ash, smoke and molten rock.Bodies were so thickly coated with ash that they looked like statues, and rescuers were forced to use sledgehammers to break through the roofs of houses buried in debris up to their rooflines to try to see if anyone was trapped inside. In the afternoon, Fanuel Garcia, director of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences, said 62 bodies had been recovered and 13 of those had been identified. Guatemala’s national disaster agency later raised the toll to 69.“It is very difficult for us to identify them because some of the dead lost their features or their fingerprints” from the red-hot flows, Garcia said. “We are going to have to resort to other methods … and if possible take DNA samples to identify them.”Hilda Lopez said her mother and sister were still missing after the slurry of hot gas, ash and rock roared into her village of San Miguel Los Lotes, just below the mountain’s flanks.“We were at a party, celebrating the birth of a baby, when one of the neighbors shouted at us to come out and see the lava that was coming,” the distraught woman said. “We didn’t believe it, and when we went out the hot mud was already coming down the street.”“My mother was stuck there, she couldn’t get out,” said Lopez, weeping and holding her face in her hands. Her husband, Joel Gonzalez, said his father had also been unable to escape and was believed to be “buried back there, at the house.”Guatemalan authorities say they had been closely monitoring the Volcano of Fire, one of Central America’s most active, after activity picked up around 6 a.m. Sunday. The volcano has registered a number of minor eruptions over the years, and no evacuations were ordered as scientific experts reported the activity was decreasing.Guatemala’s disaster agency, Conred, issued a number of standard precautions, advising people to wear protective face masks, clean their rooftops of ash once the eruption was over and cover any food and water intended for human consumption. It also said to heed any recommendations from authorities. Guatemala City’s international airport was closed due to the danger to planes.Conred spokesman David de Leon said that around 2:00pm the volcano registered a new, more powerful explosion.Soon, searing flows of lava, ash and rock mixed with water and debris were gushing down the volcano’s flanks, blocking roads and burning homes.“It traveled much faster. It arrived in communities right when the evacuation alerts were being sent out,” de Leon said.Authorities scrambled to issue an evacuation order. Some communities emptied out safely. But in places like Los Lotes and the village of El Rodeo, about eight miles (12 kilometers) downslope from the crater, it was too late for many. The fast-moving flows overtook people in homes and streets with temperatures reaching as high as 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit (700 Celsius), and hot ash and volcanic gases that can cause rapid asphyxiation.Rafael Letran, a resident of El Rodeo, criticized Conred for not evacuating communities earlier.“When the lava was already here they passed by in their pickup trucks yelling at us to leave, but the cars did not stop to pick up the people,” Letran said. “The government is good at stealing, but when it comes to helping people they lack spark.”De Leon said the disaster agency followed protocol.“As soon as we received the information around 6:00am that the volcano was in an eruptive phase, the protocol was initiated to verify with different sectors and also talk to the communities, to community leaders. … We had the information from our scientific service, and they told us the trend was that the activity was diminishing,” he said.In El Rodeo on Monday, heavily armed soldiers wearing blue masks to avoid breathing in ash stood guard behind yellow tape cordoning off the disaster scene. Helmeted workers carried bodies away on stretchers, and smoke was still rising from some parts of the ashen landscape strewn with boulders and other debris.President Jimmy Morales traveled to survey the disaster area.Emergency crews in helicopters managed to pull at least 10 people alive from areas cut off by the flows. Conred said 3,271 people had been evacuated.last_img read more

Undocumented Student Arrested After Incident At Local High School Might Request Asylum

first_imgPhoto: United We Dream Houston via TwitterDennis Rivera Sarmiento (left) poses with Cortez Downey (right), his college counselor. Brandon Roche, the immigration attorney who is representing Rivera Sarmiento, says requesting asylum is one of the options they are considering in order to avoid his deportation to Honduras.Dennis Rivera Sarmiento, an undocumented student whose arrest caused controversy after an altercation at a Houston high school back in February, has been released and his attorney said he might request asylum in order to stay in the United States.Brandon Roche, the immigration attorney that represents Rivera Sarmiento, told Houston Public Media his client was released from an ICE detention facility located in Livingston, about 80 miles north of Houston, on April 4th on a $2,500 bond.Roche added that Rivera Sarmiento, who is 19 years-old and originally from Honduras, “plead certain immigration charges and he now has to seek immigration relief before a judge.”The attorney emphasized there is no definite plan regarding the defense of Rivera Sarmiento, but he commented some of the options they are “exploring” are “things like asylum, like a U visa, like special immigrant juvenile status.”“He fears persecution if he is returned to Honduras,” Roche noted, although he didn’t provide details about why his client has such fear. The attorney admitted the chances of Rivera Sarmiento are slim and commented that “the odds are stacked against him.”Roche is currently waiting for a notification regarding the next date when Rivera Sarmiento will have to appear before an immigration judge. In addition to his immigration case, Rivera Sarmiento has an ongoing criminal case because of the assault he was charged with due to the altercation, which happened at Austin High School, which is part of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), in February.United We Dream (UWD), the largest organization of undocumented youth in the United States, has been very involved in advocating for Rivera Sarmiento’s release and actually organized a walk out at the high school.Roche detailed Rivera Sarmiento contends that the day of the incident a female student called him a “(expletive) wet back” and through a bottle of liquid at him, and that his client “defended himself by pushing her away.”A statement from HISD said that a “verbal exchange” between a female student and Rivera Sarmiento led to a “physical confrontation.” The statement added the female student was treated at a hospital and subsequently released.Damaris Gonzalez, one of UWD’s leaders in Houston, said in a written statement that Rivera Sarmiento’s release “shows us that our voices matter and that an organized community is a powerful one when it comes to protecting one another.”Nonetheless, Gonzalez added “the fight for Dennis’s freedom is far from over.”Here are a few words from Dennis from our Community gathering yesterday! Louisville Falls 54 in Extra Innings to Xavier

first_img Listen Live Watch Live Full Schedule Roster Next Game: James Madison 3/1/2019 | 4:00 PM Dan McDonnell Postgame LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The eighth-ranked Louisville baseball team suffered its first home loss of the season on Tuesday, falling 5-4 in 10 innings against Xavier at Jim Patterson Stadium. Photo Gallery ACC Network Extra Both teams went quietly in the ninth, however the Musketeers edged ahead in the 10th via a passed ball. The contest remained tied at two until the fourth when Xavier (2-5) picked up a two-out RBI single to move back in front. Louisville (5-3) never led on Tuesday, but had an answer for each of the first four Xavier runs. PDF Box Score Preview The Musketeers jumped on the board first with three consecutive singles to open the ballgame and added a second with a sacrifice fly. However, UofL starting pitcher Luke Smith limited the damage with a double play to end the frame. The Louisville attack got rolling in similar fashion, with consecutive singles from Lucas Dunn and Jake Snider starting the bottom half of the inning. Tyler Fitzgerald cut the deficit in half with a sacrifice fly that scored Dunn, and Danny Oriente knotted the game up at two with a run-scoring single two batters later. Oriente worked a five-pitch walk to start the bottom of the 10th, with Louisville looking for an answer one more time. With one away, Ethan Stringer doubled into right to move pinch-runner Adam Elliott to third and put a pair of runners in scoring position. A fly ball off the bat of Davis proved not to be deep enough to bring the runner home and a strikeout ended the comeback effort for the Cardinals. Dunn and Snider each had two-hit days at the plate, accounting for three of the Cardinals’ four runs. Louisville is back in action this weekend with a three-game series scheduled against James Madison. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., ET, at Jim Patterson Stadium. Print Friendly Version Xavier grabbed the lead back on a wild pitch in the eighth, but the lead would be short-lived again. Drew Campbell led off the bottom of the frame with an infield single and came around to score the tying run on Henry Davis’ double to left. Story Links Jared Poland (1-1) took the loss for Louisville, allowing the eventual winning run in his 1.1 innings of work. Smith ended with a no decision, giving up three runs over five innings. Live Stats Louisville had the answer again though, as Dunn singled and stole second with one out in the fifth and Snider dropped a double down the left field line to tie the game up at three apiece.last_img read more

Novel Superlens Offers a Simplified Subwavelength Imaging Technique

first_img Cesar Monzon of Enig Associates, Inc., in Bethesda, Maryland, has presented this new technique in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters. As Monzon explains, many (but not all) subwavelength imaging mechanisms involve a complicated implementation and offer narrowband operation, such as lenses using metamaterials. He hopes that his technique could overcome these challenges with purely resistive means, simply by using a thin electrically conducting sheet to counteract the effects of space’s filtration properties. “An important advantage of the present method is that the resolution of the image so produced is not limited by the extent of a wavelength as in a common lens, but by the separation from the image to the conducting thin sheet,” Monzon told PhysOrg.com. “In fact, the analysis presented in the paper indicates that we can easily form images 10 times sharper than a conventional lens (or 5% of a wavelength of operation). Actually, depending on the frequency of operation, achieving images that are over 20 times higher resolution than possible with diffraction limited optics seems feasible. Hence the proposed technique is that of a ‘superlens,’ because it beats the diffraction limit.”Basically, space acts like a low pass filter for highly evanescent components, and makes evanescent waves very short-lived; these waves usually decay exponentially with the distance from their light source. Monzon found that, when he placed a thin sheet of conducting material close to the light source, the sheet could restore the evanescent components of the light that had been diminished by the air in between. “Saving” these evanescent wave components results in near-field subwavelength imaging right behind the resistive sheet. The “spot size” (imaging area) depends on the separation between the light source and the sheet, meaning that extremely high resolution is possible for very small separations. As an additional benefit, the effect is found to be broadband.”An evanescent wave is essentially a near field wave component that is not propagating away from a radiator, but remains standing in its neighborhood,” Monzon explained. “Evanescent fields are responsible for the reactive energy around a radiator, and generally decay quickly with distance. Just like radiating waves, evanescent waves are a general property of wave equations, and since they basically form the near field of a radiator, they are needed for its proper reconstruction (via focusing or imaging). Now suppose we have a point radiator; if evanescent waves are not used in the reconstruction, such as done by a typical lens (which operate in the far field), then we get a diffraction limited image where the minimum spot size is commensurate with the wavelength. If on the other hand we utilize the evanescent fields, as done here, then we are not bound by a diffraction limited spot size, as the evanescent field spectrum has the ability to form the very near field. For a point radiator this means, in principle, extreme resolution, with a minimum spot size clearly a very small fraction of the wavelength, hence enabling very high resolution imaging.” (PhysOrg.com) — Since the first demonstrations of subwavelength imaging just a few years ago, scientists have been making great improvements, developing a variety of new methods for realizing high-resolution imaging. Recently, a new superlens for subwavelength imaging has been developed that offers a simplified and wide broadband operation. The superlens could potentially shrink the size of features on computer chips to make faster transistors, as well as increase the storage capacity of computer memory. Unlike in previous subwavelength imaging techniques that use surface plasmons (electron density fluctuations) and that are plagued by losses, the new technique has a different physical cause based on harnessing the spectrum of evanescent fields. As Monzon explained, the smaller wave impedance of the conducting sheet enables researchers to trade definition for amplitude.”What is shown here is that a simple conducting thin sheet acts like a special type of ‘lens’ for evanescent fields, allowing the details of a nearby image to be transferred to the other side of the sheet faithfully (this happens because accurate reconstruction of the evanescent fields of the original image takes place there),” Monzon explained. “Now, it happens that the more conducting the sheet is, the more faithful the reconstruction. However, as we know, the more conducting the sheet is, the more reflective it becomes, resulting in smaller transmitted fields, and a lower amplitude image being formed. Thus better definition can be obtained at the expense of sacrificing amplitude, and vice versa.”This technique could have useful applications, showing that micrometer or nanometer layers of resistive materials can be used to achieve subwavelength imaging in the optical and elusive infrared regions. The method could also be applied to other areas of physics where wave motion exists.”The sharper images, the simplicity of the scheme, and the broadband operation are definite advantages for applications,” Monzon said. “A superlens such as this, capable of creating images of objects or features much smaller than the wavelength of light, could be use in novel types of microscopes, of the super-resolution type. The method can also be used to shrink the size of features on computer chips, so to make smaller transistors that will result in faster computer chips. There is also potential to use this technique in computer memory technology such as read and write devices, so as to be able to access even smaller bits, which can definitely increase general storage capacity/density, and the corresponding data transfer capability.”More information: Cesar Monzon. “Subwavelength Imaging Using Conducting Sheets.” Physical Review Letters, 102, 173901 (2009).© 2009 PhysOrg.com Citation: Novel Superlens Offers a Simplified Subwavelength Imaging Technique (2009, May 11) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2009-05-superlens-subwavelength-imaging-technique.html This document is subject to copyright. Report shows data centers not using as much power as projected

first_img Citation: Report shows data centers not using as much power as projected (2011, August 2) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-08-centers-power.html A new report commissioned by the New York Times, shows that electricity consumption used by data centers in the United States and around the world grew at a much slower pace then was predicted by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report released in 2007. The slower pace is attributed to both a downturn in the economy and improved efficiency in data servers. More information: www.analyticspress.com/datacenters.html U.S. Data Centers Consume 45 Billion kWh Annually, Study The report, written by Jonathan G. Koomey consulting professor to Stanford University, shows that instead of doubling, as the EPA predicted, energy consumption by data centers (over the period 2005 to 2010) in the United States grew at just 35%, while consumption worldwide grew at the much higher rate of 56%. Koomey attributes the lower than expected results to a downturn in the global economy and to advances in server technology, the result of which was fewer new servers going online during the study period than was predicted by the EPA.Called “Growth in Data Center Power Use 2005 to 2010” the study that led to the report was designed to figure out as much about power use by data servers as is possible using publicly available records. In addition to ascertaining how many servers have been brought online in the past five years, Koomey also learned that data centers now account for approximately 1.7 to 2.2 percent of all electricity consumed in the United States and 1.1 to 1.5 for the world. In an interesting side note, Koomey also discovered that Google, the online search giant apparently accounts for just 1% of the total amount of electricity used by data centers in the United States, a figure that indicates its servers are far more efficient than the standards used by most others in the industry.Koomey notes that increased use of server virtualization (a technique whereby fewer computers are used to run the same number of programs) by many companies implementing cloud computing platforms resulted in fewer servers being installed, and thus less energy use than would have been needed had standard technology been installed. Also, increased attention to cooling methods likely played a part, as cooling typically accounts for up to half of a data centers energy use. The result of these measures, when combined with the lower demand for computing resources due to the slowdown of the economy, resulted in the lower numbers seen in the report; though Koomey points out, it’s still a lot of electricity and data server power requirements are only likely to continue growing as cloud based computing appears to be the wave of the future. One company with its eye on the problem is Microsoft who in a recent paper, proposed installing “Data Furnaces” in the basements of homes across the country.center_img © 2010 PhysOrg.com Explore further This document is subject to copyright. Cambridge team exposes EMV card vulnerabilities

first_img(Phys.org)—At a cryptography gathering in Leuven, Belgium, on Tuesday, Cambridge University researchers made it known that they do not like what they see in chip and pin systems. Banks rely on customer confidence in their word that chip and pin systems are safe, but the researchers tell quite a different story. Part of the problem has to do with the number generators, which the researchers give a failing grade. Each time a customer is involved in a chip and pin transaction, withdrawing cash or buying goods, a unique unpredictable number is created to authenticate the transaction. The unpredictable number, generated by software, is supposed to be chosen at random. But researchers say the number is highly predictable, because dates or timestamps had been used. www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/20 … the-pre-play-attack/www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/Papers/unattack.pdf Explore further © 2012 Phys.org More information: Their paper, “Chip and Skim: Cloning EMV Cards with the Pre-play Attack” presents the troubling details of weaknesses in protocol and random number generation which leave customers in the cold as fraud victims. “EMV” is the name given to the system from its original developers Europay, MasterCard and Visa. The system is also known as chip and pin, and is the leading system for card payments, in Europe, much of Asia, and starting to be used in North America. Payment cards contain a chip so they can execute an authentication protocol. POS terminals or ATMs generate the unpredictable number, for each transaction to ensure it is fresh. Some EMV implementers have merely used counters, timestamps or home-grown algorithms to supply this number. This exposes them to a pre-play attack, say the Cambridge team. The researchers find it shocking that many ATMs and point-of-sale terminals have “seriously defective” random number generators, often “just counters.”The study authors also point to a key shortcoming at the protocol level where “the party depending upon freshness in the protocol is not the party responsible for generating it.” Although the issuing bank is depending on the merchant for transaction freshness, they said, the merchant “may not be incentivised to provide it, may not be able to deliver it correctly due to lack of end-to-end authentication with the issuer, and might even be collusive (directly or indirectly).”The study team’s harshest words are for those banks that “suppress information about known vulnerabilities, with the result that fraud victims continue to be denied refunds.” The researchers argue the lack of fairness when any customer who complains of fraud may be told by the bank that since EMVs are secure, the victim is mistaken “or lying when they dispute card transactions.” And yet, said the study, “again and again, the banks have turned out to be wrong.” One vulnerability after another has been discovered and exploited by criminals. They said it has mostly been left to independent security researchers to identify what is happening and to spread the word. The researchers said that, in looking for solutions, it would not be practical to turn to what is a slow and complex negotiation process between merchants, banks and vendors. “It is time for bank regulators to take an interest,” they said. “It’s welcome that the US Federal Reserve is now paying attention, and time for European regulators to follow suit.” This document is subject to copyright.
