first_imgby Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington baseball team came into Thursday’s games 2-8 while the girls softball team was 8-2. But Thursday the tables turned as the boys picked up a doubleheader sweep while the girls were swept.Wellington head baseball coach Jeff Frazee told the group at Crusader Club that the 2-8 record was a result of extremely tough competition and he said over the next couple of weeks, the Crusaders could get back to .500.His prophecy seems intact at the moment. Wellington would beat Circle in game one 6-4, and 15-2 in game two.The Crusaders were led by senior Connor Phelps, who went 3-3 at the plate in game one. He singled in the first inning, tripled in the second and doubled in the fourth.Wellington opened with a 1-0 lead but fell behind as Circle scored three of its four runs in the bottom of the first. The Dukes responded with two runs in the second. Then in the fourth, trailing 4-3, Cade Phelps would bang out a RBI single bringing his older brother home to tie the game. Wellington would eventually add one more run to pick up the victory.Therin Frame was the winning pitcher in 4.1 innings pitched, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out three. Adam Hilt started for Wellington and pitch 2.2 innings allowing four hits, three walks, while striking out three.Cade PhelpsIn game two, Cade Phelps had a huge day on the plate and on the mound. He would rack up five RBIs on three hits – including a double in the second, fourth and seventh innings. On the other side of the ball, Phelps struck out eight, allowing one earned run, eight hits, and one walk over seven innings.Wellington never run-ruled Circle but scored seven runs in the seventh after leading 8-2.Cameron Bartleson also got a double and three RBIs.Wellington baseball team travels to Winfield next Thursday. ————The Wellington girls league title aspirations may have gone by the wayside after losing two tough games to Circle Thursday. The second game was heartbreaking in that Wellington would open up with a 7-0 lead but could not maintain the lead. Circle scored a run on a Toedman RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to break a 11-all tie.Trailing 12-11, Ryleigh Buck got on base with a walk and moved to third with one out thanks to a stolen base and wild pitch. But nobody could bring her home.Baylee DeJarnettThis game will be remembered by Baylee DeJarnett’s grand slam home run in the top of the second. With Madi Lewellen, McKenna Oathout and Avery Rusk on base off two singles and an error, DeJarnett stepped up to home plate and ripped one over the center field fence.Unfortunately, Circle would respond with two five-run innings in the third and fourth and the game was tied at 10-all going into the fifth.Brooke McCorkle had a rough night in the pitching circle, allowing 14 hits, two walks and striking out one.Wellington would have 12 hits off of two pitchers. In the first game, Wellington got off to a good start when McCorkle had a 2RBI double in the top of the first. But Circle wouldn’t allow another run until the seventh. In between then Circle would score two runs in the first, five runs in the fourth, and three runs in the fifth for the win.DeJarnett had a double in that game.Lewellen was the losing pitcher, allowing 15 hits with no walks, and striking out one.The Lady Dukes are now 8-4 in the season with all four of those losses being league games. It’s more like 3 with 9 unearned runs. I’m not naming girls with obvious errors, they are kids playing a game and everyone makes errors. It’s not fair to anyone not be fair with stats. Simple fact is Circle was hitting the ball hard of off the Freshman pitcher, who probably should have been pulled. Errors the judgment of scorekeeper. It is consistent with how the Circle scorekeeper recorded it on their stats. Report Reply 0 replies · active 224 weeks ago Post a new comment Enter text right here!
